There are plenty of chemical remedies to alleviate hangovers, but we have come here to talk about a natural antidote to help reduce the hangover the next day, because prevention is better than cure.

According to a recent study in Seoul, probiotics in cheese may help reduce the harmful effects of drinking. And it all has to do with what’s going on in the liver, which is trying to break down alcohol at full speed. However, there is a by-product called acetaldehyde that can build up and cause hangover symptoms.

Although acetaldehyde can be diluted by probiotic bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, until now there had been no focus on how foods such as cheese could help to do this. The study was conducted with probiotic cheese with two specific bacteria: Lactococcus lactis LB1022 and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LB1418.

The researchers found that probiotics in cheeses such as goat cheese or shredded cheddar -especially rich in these fungi- helped speed up alcohol metabolism by enhancing key liver enzymes (alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase). It also activated important pathways that reduce fat accumulation in the liver and inflammation, which can occur when you drink too much.
