Australian supermarket chain Woolworths is a global pioneer for activating a quiet hour in its shops five days a week. It is an experience designed to reduce anxiety and sensory stress for certain customers with specific needs.
During the quiet hour, Woolworths dims the lights, turns off the music or radio, turns off the cash register beeps and turns off the oven buzzers for one hour, Monday to Friday between 10.30am and 11.30am.

The supermarket is providing a quieter shopping environment for one hour, which it has just extended to five days a week due to the positive effects of its initiative developed in partnership with disability service provider Life Without Barriers. This, first launched in 2019 with a weekly session, is currently implemented in more than 900 shops across Australia and could be a benchmark for other shops wanting to replicate its innovative inclusive system.
