What is the ‘menu anxiety’ suffered by the new generations?

The generalized anxiety of the new generations crosses all aspects of life, modifying lifestyle and certain consumption habits in its wake. From alcohol abstinence to socialization or culinary rituals. The latter is the result of a conclusion reached by the British Italian restaurant chain Prezzo.

The results of its survey of more than 2,000 people focused on the fact that most of them admitted to suffering from ‘menu anxiety‘ in restaurants. The theme of the study, which was based on measuring ‘the pleasure they felt when eating out’, would lead to surprising results such as that 86% of Generation Z had been affected by this overwhelming feeling when ordering food.

Menu anxiety is mainly due to three triggers: the cost of food, not finding something they like on the menu and regretting what they ordered. More than a third of millennials also said that having too many choices on the menu also complicated the situation.

In this sense, 38% of Generation Z and millennials stated that they would not go to a restaurant if they had not looked at the menu beforehand; and a third of them also stated that they used to ask other people to order for them in restaurants due to the anxiety it generated.

Finally, another of the reasons that make it difficult for young people to manage ordering in restaurants is their use of social networks. A third of the 25-34 age range expressed that they would opt for those menu items that were best viewed online.
