The Christmas tradition, which had its origins in the 1960s, continues to make history for another year by paying homage to a Christmas classic: the poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas‘ to celebrate its 200th anniversary.
The gingerbread house -on display in the State Dining Room of the White House Executive Residence- includes a sugar biscuit replica of the famous book, as well as a model of Santa’s sleigh flying over the White House lawn.
First Lady Jill Biden announced the creation as part of the annual White House Christmas display, which this year revolves around the theme of ‘Magic, Wonder and Joy’ through a construction using 40 sheets of sugar biscuit dough, 40 sheets of gingerbread dough, 90 pounds of pastillage, 30 pounds of chocolate and 50 pounds of royal icing, the White House revealed in a statement.
This work by executive pastry chef Susan Morrison also includes the classic phrase: ‘Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night’ which closes the design of the house, while continuing the tradition started in the 1960s by Edward E. Shapiro when he presented President Lyndon B. Johnson‘s family with a gingerbread house.
