Far from the luxuries of haute cuisine, Anthony Bourdain, one of the most influential chefs of all time, loved a New York delicacy that he always longed for when embarking on his gastronomic journeys with which he traveled some 250 days a year; and that was the pastrami sandwich.
This classic American snack with rye bread, pastrami, mustard, pickles and cream soda became the favorite of the TV star who has inspired the creation of a new A24 film. He would reveal this in an interview with Variety, in which he told what he most wanted to eat when he returned home: ‘The first thing I order when I go back to New York is a pastrami sandwich’.
The generosity that characterized Bourdain also made him share the place where to try the best one, called, as its name suggests, Pastrami Queen. Located on Lexington Avenue, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, this place has even wanted to reference it on its website with a quote from Bourdain, who called the sandwich ‘The real deal’.
‘Pastrami Queen is a really good pastrami sandwich, if not the best, one of the best. A good mix of fat and lean. It’s the real deal, served hot on fresh, soft rye bread with just the right mustard. Good pickles. And they deliver as promised. I order a cream soda. For me it’s quintessential New York food,’ he told Variety.
Formerly known as Pastrami King until it moved from Brooklyn to Manhattan in 1961, this specialty restaurant now has four locations in New York. And, according to its website, its pastrami recipe hasn’t changed since it debuted in 1956, praising its meat as ‘tender, juicy and full of smoke and spice’.
