As if it were a sci-fi product, this NASA coffee cup is delicately sculpted with a series of curves and geometric decisions that favor the controlled movement of the liquid.
NASA has spent years developing this design capable of holding the coffee in place, using fluid dynamics to mimic the effect of gravity. In order to bring it closer to the earthly plane, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration shared an illustrative video on Twitter so we can all see how the space cup is used.
The caption reads: ‘the classic cappuccino, meet the space cup. This demonstration showcases cappuccino drinking research, which studies the process of drinking from specially designed space cups that use fluid dynamics to mimic the effect of gravity.’
In the clip, astronaut Nicole Mann pours coffee from a bag into a special container. She then gives the cup a gentle swirl to show how the drink stays in the cup and doesn’t spill at all.
