In the neighbourhood of Huertas (Madrid) is one of the great hot spots of the national beer culture, known as Los Gatos Madrid. It is one of the most legendary taverns in the city and since 1987 it has been attracting locals and tourists alike who want to experience the true essence of the local tradition.

Whether for its culinary offerings or its historic décor full of curios, old photographs and memorabilia, this place has become a place of worship even for celebrities like the Rolling Stones when they visit Madrid. Although this is not the only traditional bar they adore in the capital, the Taberna Ángel Sierra, located in the Plaza de Chueca, is also the place to go for that traditional spirit adored by the Madrilenians.

The history of Los Gatos

Miguel, an innkeeper from the Costa del Sol, transformed an old haberdashery into this brewery where you can enjoy well-drawn beers and vermouth on tap along with tapas or dishes such as gildas, homemade croquettes, as well as its famous sirloin toast with goat’s cheese, one of the most popular dishes in the restaurant. The menu also features other classics such as omelettes, anchovies in vinegar and a selection of Iberian cured meats.

The legacy started by Miguel continues to evolve now under the leadership of Juan López and Lola Creagh, as a place that, despite the contemporary wave of neo-taverns, has managed to maintain its essence and roots as one of the great references of Madrid’s gastronomy.
