It is likely that once you uncork a bottle of wine, it will be gone before you have to put it away. But maybe you just want to enjoy a glass of good wine. Therefore, you need to know how long an open bottle of wine can last. It will depend mainly on the type of wine -the more tannins, the better it will be preserved- and also the place where it will be kept.
All wines have a life cycle. When a bottle is uncorked, the liquid is exposed to oxygen, heat, light and other factors that will affect the wine, which can cause chemical reactions, alter its properties and vaporize its volatile components. One of the most typical ways to preserve an open bottle is to put the cork back on and store it in the refrigerator. This will reduce exposure to heat, light and oxygen.
The period in which a wine can be stored will vary depending on the type of wine you have opened. The Familia Fernández Rivera winery has shared a series of tips to keep in mind.
How long each wine lasts
If it is a red wine, it can be kept open in good conditions after 3 or 5 days. Although the lighter ones can be kept in the refrigerator, it is advisable to close them with a stopper and place them in a cool, dark place.
The winery recommends storing white wines in the refrigerator once they have been opened. In the case of light white wines, they will easily last 5 to 7 days, while full-bodied white wines will have a shelf life of 3 to 5 days.
As for sparkling wine, it lasts between 1 and 3 days fresh, stored in the refrigerator, of course. To maintain its effervescence, it is necessary to close it with a specific stopper that insulates well. Finally, fortified wines such as Sherry or Port are the ones that last the longest. They can have a shelf life of almost a month. In this case, the more sugars and/or tannins and/or tannins the wine contains, the longer it will last open.
