Under opened on April 2, 2019, reaching the milestone of being the first European restaurant to serve food under the sea. Specifically, five and a half meters deep in Lindenes, south of Norway, bathing in the waters of the North Sea. Now, more than four years later, the adventure has come to an end and the owners are going to look for another way out of this business.
The restaurant began to be planned in 2015 by the Ubostad brothers, hosteliers, and the Snohetta architecture studio. The main attraction was the architecture and landscape, including the harsh climate that surrounds it.
Under had a Michelin star since 2020, but not only is food served in imposing rectangular buildings that submerge into the sea. It is also a marine biology observatory.
The menu, according to their website, costs about 2,950 Norwegian crowns, about €255. There you can take all local products, with combinations that will take you out of your “comfort zone”, as their page says. It consists of 18 dishes among which there are crabs, snails, seaweed or limpets.
The restaurant has a glass window to the North Sea that is 3 meters high and 11 meters long . The building is made of concrete and was built on land and later lowered into the sea, filling it with water to sink it.
According to the note posted on the restaurant’s website, it will remain closed for ” a short period ” this winter with the goal of being “up and running” in March 2024 . The “new concept” of the restaurant “will be presented in December,” the statement said.
