Today is World Chocolate Day, and what better than to enjoy it without remorse with large doses of cocoa in all these shops and patisseries in Madrid.
The 13th of September pays tribute to the birth of two essential figures in the history of chocolate, Roald Dahl, the author of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, and Milton S. Hershey, founder of The Hershey Chocolate Company, considered one of the great pioneers of the chocolate industry.
From its origins in ancient American civilisations to the present day, chocolate has evolved as the most important and most consumed sweet in the world. We suggest a series of places in Madrid that elaborate and sculpt it with mastery.
24 Onzas
Chocolates, powdered cocoa, tablets (mini, creative), capotes (iced chocolates), truffles, dragées, Easter eggs, nougat, orangettes and citronettes… The list that Carmen Capote manages in this establishment, a project that she has been shaping for a long time, is practically endless. And her demanding DNA is evident: in the 24 Onzas bakery, all the products are made by hand every day, adapting their offer to the winter and summer seasons. The quality of the ingredients used, as well as the care for the result (because here the times are calculated exhaustively throughout the entire production process), do the rest.

Oriol Balaguer
Oriol Balaguer, the Catalan confectioner who has conquered the whole of Spain with panettones, bonbons, palm trees and Easter eggs, continues to strive for excellence. And he does so through a sweet gastronomy that combines creativity, passion and emotion: he makes each and every one of his creations using ‘high quality products, always under the parameters of the best raw materials’. That is why he has received multiple awards (Best Artisan Panettone of Spain 2017, Best Artisan Butter Croissant of Spain 2014, Best Artisan Pastry Chef of Spain 2008…) during all these years, throughout his professional career.
José Ortega y Gasset, 44.
Nunos
Like his previous colleague on the list, master pastry chef José Fernández has numerous awards under his belt: Best Traditional Torrija in Madrid 2017, Soria Gastronómica Award 2016… And although his establishment is actually a patisserie, one of his most emblematic products is chocolate. The owner of Nunos has been combining avant-garde trends with traditional ones for more than a decade. The result? A section of the most appetising chocolates. Oh, and their surprising annual editions of torrijas and roscones are already famous among locals and foreigners alike.
