Researchers at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, conducted a biometric analysis in which they found that the smell of freshly baked pizza reduces stress, anxiety and irritability.

The scientific study, led by Professor Oli Buckley in collaboration with Chicago Town, measured biometric indicators such as heart rate and galvanic skin response in participants exposed to the smell of freshly baked pizza. The results showed reduced levels of anxiety and nervousness.

Scientists suggest that this may be due to the release of serotonin, the ‘happy’ hormone that regulates mood, sleep and appetite. In addition, not only is it beneficial for the effects of the smell itself, pizza also contains tryptophan in many of its ingredients, such as cheese or meat. When this reaches the brain it is also transformed into serotonin, contributing to an increased sense of well-being and relaxation.

Add to all this dopamine, the pleasure substance, and you have solid science that positively supports the consumption of pizza. What more could you ask for?
