The preparation of birria, the regional Mexican dish from Jalisco, involves an intricate elaboration process. The meat is slowly cooked in a consommé of chiles, spices, herbs, aromas and a touch of vinegar until the protein is tender, and its broth acquires its characteristic flavors and complexity.
This culinary process, apparently complex, could now be shortened in sync with the frenetic rhythm of TikTok, with ‘birria bombs’ for those amateur cooks who do not have the necessary ingredients on hand to make traditional birria. A reality that has been demonstrated on the internet by users with dozens of viral videos highlighting this new trendy ingredient that has just exploded on the net.
The birria bombs are presented as deep red spheres that promise to contain all the components to make birria, minus the meat. With chiles, spices, tomato, garlic, onion, herbs and concentrated broth, the balls can turn birria into a one-step procedure. In this sense, their great appeal lies in their simplicity and immediacy.
How to make it? Heat and simmer the ingredients according to the instructions given on the birria bomb package, and let it cook. If you use a slow cooker, it will take a total of five minutes. Once the meat and consommé are ready, the birria can be served like any other, as in juicy tacos that are infused with that contrast of flavors achieved immediately.
