Founded in 1914, La Duquesita is one of the most historic bakeries in Madrid, which has based its success on the reinvention of tradition through innovation. A mantra baked in its bakery by the well-known Catalan pastry chef Oriol Balaguer, the creator of the best artisan roscón in Madrid.
The new edition of the contest, which took place at the Casa de la Panadería in the Plaza Mayor, wanted to highlight this year the talent of the confectioner, offering him the title of ‘Best Artisan Roscón de Reyes of Madrid 2024-25‘.
At the gastronomic event, the jury, chaired by master pastry chef Paco Torreblanca, would select the winners from among ten finalists based on a series of factors such as aesthetics, flavor, toppings, aroma and texture. In addition, the roscones could not have fillings.
In this sense, Balaguer’s iteration managed to balance all these variables in an elegant roscón with all the aromas integrated in a balanced way. Beyond the recognition, La Duquesita won a prize of €2,500 in Mantequerías Arias products, which will be donated to an NGO.
Meanwhile, in the ranking, the sophisticated roscón from Begoña San Pedro’s Madreamiga is in second place, and Cientotreintagrados is in third.
