Coca-Cola is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, and has even become addictive for a large part of the population. However, they may now reconsider opening their next can, following a recent study by the University of Michigan. According to its findings, it is among the sugary drinks that could rob a person of 12 minutes of life for every one consumed.
The University’s researchers investigated the impact of ultra-processed foods on our longevity, revealing surprising data. Nutritionist Luis Alberto Zamora explained that certain foods such as a hot dog, for example, take an average of 36 minutes off your life, while egg sandwiches take 13.6 minutes.

Fortunately, scientists also found that including certain types of fish in your diet can add up to 10 minutes to your life.
The study analysed more than 5,800 popular food products in the US, assessing their impact on health based on their composition of additives, micronutrients and macronutrients, such as fats, calories and sugars. The results showed that choices such as fruits, vegetables and even a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich help to lengthen it. In addition, the researchers concluded that for every 10 per cent of daily calories from fruit and vegetables, rather than processed meat or beef, we could gain an additional 48 minutes of life.
Dr Olivier Jolliet, who led the study, stressed the importance of making gradual changes to our diets to improve both our health and the environment. He said, ‘small dietary substitutions can be a powerful and effective strategy for making big gains without drastic changes.
