The world of gastronomy and food is constantly innovating to create new products and optimize resources, sustainability and health. In the field of oils, so topical for different reasons, the startup Algae Cooking Club has just launched an innovative algae oil. Although it is not the first on the market, as Thrive Algae Oil was launched in 2015, it did not have the expected commercial success and was closed in 2020.

Now, Algae Cooking Club is looking to do better with a sustainable product made from fermented microalgae. It emerges as another sustainable alternative, thanks to the fact that they have the potential to produce high-quality fats, proteins and nutrients in a matter of days with little soil and water.

According to the startup, during the oil production process, the microalgae are fed with sugar in bioreactors. It highlights the fact that no pesticides, chemicals or mixtures are used. In the bioreactors, these organisms are converted into oil. In just a few days, the algae obtain a high oil content (almost 80%). The next step is to carry out an ‘expeller pressing’ technique (similar to olive oil). Finally, the resulting oil is bottled in recyclable and functional aluminum bottles.

Regarding its flavor, this seaweed oil is described as “light, neutral and a little buttery”. In addition, they also highlight some characteristics such as the high concentration of healthy Omega-9, a smokier point than other oils, the versatility in the kitchen (from cooking sauces, fried or baked recipes), added to the low environmental impact. The price is 25 € per bottle and will start shipping from mid-late February.
