The global chain takes on the ‘kagami mochi’ New Year’s elaboration with an exclusive menu that revolves around mochi and its texture.
Kagami mochi is a traditional Japanese New Year’s garnish that usually consists of two round mochis -rice cakes- placed one on top of the other, and a daidai -a Japanese sour orange- with a leaf stuck on top.
Starbucks’ ode to matcha and mochi takes the form of a matcha and cream cake created with plant-based ingredients. It also includes the matcha cream donut, filled and dipped in this sweet and sour flavour, and the matcha butter sandwich. The latter is made with salted butter and matcha-flavoured red bean paste.
The sweets are meant to be paired with the upcoming Roasted Green Tea and Rice Frappuccino, which also evokes the texture of mochi.
The matcha menu is available at Starbucks Japan branches from 26 December.
