True Simpsons fans will remember the episode ‘Lisa the Vegetarian’ in which Paul McCartney makes a cameo. In it, Lisa decides to give up meat for good as a life decision in which, after receiving criticism from her inner circle, she finds support along the way from none other than Paul and Linda, who appear to play themselves to encourage her in her decision to go vegan.
The Beatles legend even jokes with some seriousness when she unexpectedly reveals the ‘cryptic’ recipe for her vegetarian lentils: ‘Linda and I are strong supporters of animal rights. In fact, if you turn ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ upside down, you’ll hear a recipe for a great lentil soup!

Naturally, most viewers assumed that this was another of the absurdities intrinsic to The Simpsons, but they were wrong. The reality is that McCartney recorded himself reading the recipe, which was then played backwards over the end credits. If you search the internet, you can find an isolated version of the audio, which confirms that the legendary Beatle really did include a vegan recipe in his music.
So you don’t even have to go to the effort of searching online, here are the ingredients and the culinary process so you can recreate Paul McCartney’s vegan lentils.
Ingredients
1 medium onion, chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 cup chopped carrots
2 celery sticks, chopped
½ cup lentils
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
2¼ cups vegetable stock or water
Recipe
Start by heating the vegetable oil in a large pot and add the chopped onion, garlic, carrots and celery. Let them fry until soft. Then add the lentils, bay leaf and vegetable stock and bring to the boil. When it starts to bubble, reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are tender, 15-20 minutes. Add salt, pepper and fresh parsley. Voila!
