Framed in the nightlife scene of Changsha, located in China’s Hunan province, this grilled ice snack is captivating both locals and visitors wandering the streets.
This Chinese street food phenomenon, which ties in with the spicy macro trend, consists of seemingly ordinary ice with contrasting elements. 15 yen, or about 2 euros.
The spicy ice cubes reflect the innovative spirit of Asian cuisine through a process that begins with cubes placed over an open flame, transformed into gems through a meticulous barbecue ritual.
The ice cubes are coated with oil and seasoned with a unique spice blend of spicy chicken chilli, earthy ground cumin, aromatic chopped spring onions and fragrant coriander, creating an unexpected result with a warm, smoky exterior.
The finishing touch is provided by sauces that intensify the flavour of the ice, such as tangy soy sauce, umami-rich oyster sauce and a touch of sesame oil.
