The future looks bright when creative minds come up with new products to alleviate the climate crisis. Such is the case with this disruptive invention known as TONY®.

Lea Lorenz aims to revolutionise the industry with this large modular fridge that works without electricity, powered by evaporative cooling, as an alternative to the traditional fridge: one of the most electricity-consuming household appliances.

It is a modular clay system that uses the principle of evaporative cooling without the need to store food in the fridge, allowing food, especially fruit and vegetables, to stay fresh and not spoil.

The modules, which can be stacked on wooden shelves, consist of a water reservoir, a food container and a lid that work as follows: the porous clay known as raku naturally absorbs the water in the reservoir, and when it evaporates on the walls of the food container, it cools the interior to between 13 and 17 degrees Celsius.

Lea Lorenz’s eco-futuristic, low-impact, energy-efficient fridge is thus presented as the great modern reimagining of the planet-changing method of refrigeration.
