This new concept revolving around its alien mascot continues the fast food chain’s stream of nostalgic ‘come backs’, following other activations such as the launch of its Grimace-inspired burger and milkshake. According to Business Insider, McDonald’s will now go further into another dimension with a new restaurant inspired by CosMc, an obscure McDonaldland character introduced in the 1980s.
‘Our new business team is developing a new concept we will call CosMc’s, which we will test in a small number of locations in a limited geography early next year,’ the company’s CEO Kempczinski unveiled during a McDonald’s earnings conference. ‘CosMc’s is a small-format concept with all the McDonald’s DNA but with its own personality.’
Who is CosMc?
The inspiration behind this new restaurant is the extraterrestrial CosMc, a retired McDonald’s character who, after residing on the fringes of the collective imagination of the McDonald’s universe for all this time, is now projected into the core of its space.
This mascot appeared in several McDonald’s commercials in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, and apparently visited Earth solely to sample the chain’s food.
CosMc, depicted in orange, with bulging eyes and several hands encircling his body, as well as a round spacesuit, proclaimed to be on a ‘space mission’ in which he took your items and exchanged them for something unrelated. The new CosMc’s concept, which will be installed in 2024 in some of its locations, will bear some resemblance to current McDonald’s restaurants, but will feature its own aesthetic and perhaps even a unique menu.
