The cult Taiwanese chain on the London scene will open its seventh restaurant in the city’s urban core. Named BAO City, the venue will also become Bao’s flagship karaoke bar.
In Bloomberg Arcade, the hot spot where indie, arts and culture restaurants line up within the heart of London’s Square Mile, BAO now installs this culinary space where it introduces large sharing plates for groups looking to feast alongside the restaurant’s classics: noodles and its selection of xiao chi (small bites).
Erchen Chang is known for being the Taiwanese chef, creative director and co-founder of this restaurant that explores the intersection between art, gastronomy and design under a contemporary vision of her native culture.
‘We are very excited to open BAO City, where we can realize our dream of recreating a Taiwanese karaoke bar right in the center of the city’s financial district,’ Chang expresses.
From the interior design to the ambiance, the new space differs quite a bit from its predecessor venues with a new interior design inspired by 1980s and 1990s Taiwan, illuminated by neon lights.
Inside, it also features two private karaoke rooms – with a catalog of over 300,000 songs – that evoke the aesthetic imagery of Edward Yang and Oliver Stone’s lonely man films ‘Taipei Story’ and ‘Wall Street’.
Designed by BAO’s in-house creative team, MATHS, the new restaurant’s interior features dark red satin-finished walls, cherry wood veneer panels and burgundy leather-covered banquettes in geometric shapes.
Meanwhile, the menu is devised around sharing plates, BAO classics and a selection of xiao chi. As for the liquid proposal, this now includes beer towers so that attendees can drink and dance to the music.
BAO City will open its doors on September 26, although interested parties will be able to start booking on the official BAO website from September 6.
