This weekend, spanish King Felipe and Queen Letizia travelled to Galicia to visit Princess Leonor, who is currently completing part of her military training at the Marín Naval School.
The strict official day would give way to a more relaxed family plan with which to delve into the Galician tradition of good food. The King and Queen decided to opt for the Loxe Mareiro restaurant, a culinary reference in Carril that drinks directly from the essence and freshness of the sea.
Mother and daughter were the first to arrive, taking a seat on their terrace on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. There, the queen opted for a glass of Albariño, while her daughter opted for a simple glass of water. Afterwards, they both went inside the restaurant, a former customs station converted into a gastronomic temple.
Loxe Mareiro, created by the founders of Abastos 2.0, bet more than a decade ago for a clear concept: to bring to the table the best of the fish market and local orchards. In the restaurant, they have a constantly evolving and changing menu, basing their menu on what is taken from the sea each day. However, the family could have enjoyed some classics such as San Martiño with clams from Carril, octopus salpicón, mussels with chorizo or their exquisite sea bream.
At the end of the meal, King Felipe VI joined them for coffee. Although we don’t know if there was a sweet to end the experience, Loxe Mareiro’s cream-filled cañitas and traditional doughnuts from the local bakery are said to be some of the restaurant’s greatest musts.
