Sauces on food always generate a debate between those for and against. Whether on French fries, hamburgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, rice dishes or even pizzas, there are two people: those who add ketchup and those who do not. And, although in certain dishes it is taken for granted that ketchup or mustard are an essential accompaniment -see hamburgers or hot dogs-, it is not so clear. And if not, just ask Barack Obama.
We have rescued a conversation that chef Anthony Bourdain had with former President Barack Obama in which they precisely address this question. The media chef (who passed away in 2018), asks Obama if “is it ever acceptable to put ketchup on hot dogs?”.
To which the former president replied with a resounding “No” and even added that “it is not acceptable after the age of 8”. Regarding age, Bourdain takes the opportunity to continue the debate on sauces in food, explaining that his 8-year-old daughter put ketchup on fried eggs and that he did not know how a good parent should react to such a situation. In a humorous tone, Obama responded sharply: “With an intervention. I think you just have to say, you know what? That’s not acceptable, I’m sorry,” both personalities ended with laughter.
And you, are you like Obama and hate ketchup on hot dogs, or do you prefer to pour a good splash of sauces on them?
