From chef José Andrés to American Niki Nayama have rallied around the figure of Kamala Harris to support the presidential candidate with the most culinary skills on the political scene.
The ‘Cooking for Kamala‘ program is a grassroots project that began cooking in early August, just as Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee. That idea would lead to a big event at Zoom that would take place yesterday, Aug. 29.
The initiative, started by Congressman Eric Swalwell (CA-14), brought together dozens of celebrity chefs for a live fundraiser hosted by Padma Lakshmi and Joel McHale.
The collective – led by chefs Suzanne Goin, Susan Feniger and Stuart O’Keefe – aimed to raise support and funds for Harris’ campaign while celebrating her powerful figure and legacy on the political stage.
The 90-minute virtual event featured Goin in his kitchen preparing Harris’ recipe for whole herb-roasted chicken. Participants could shop for ingredients in an ‘a la carte cooking’ format, enlivened by chefs weighing in with cooking tips, side dish suggestions, answers to cooking questions and more.
