A recent study has just put to rest some of the endless doubts about the health effects of coffee. In December, researchers from the University of Coimbra published a study entitled ‘Impact of coffee intake on human aging: Epidemiology and cellular mechanisms’ in the journal Ageing Research Reviews, showing how coffee can help reduce mortality and increase life expectancy by 1.8 years.

Coffee intake attenuates the main causes of mortality, dampening mortality associated with cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, cancer and respiratory diseases, as well as some of the main causes of functional decline in older people, such as memory loss, depression and frailty,’ the authors explain in the introduction.

However, the benefits of drinking it vary depending on the time of day. Another study by researchers at Tulane University in New Orleans concluded that drinking it in the morning was associated with lower mortality rates than drinking it later in the day. This was published in the European Heart Journal on 8 January, after analysing the dietary data of more than 42k adults over nine years.

Comparing adult coffee consumption and causes of death, the researchers found that those who drank two to three cups of coffee in the morning had ‘significantly lower risks of dying’ from any cause and of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to non-coffee drinkers.
