When you order takeaway food, it’s not uncommon for some of the products to be missing or to arrive in poor condition. But it’s unusual for it to arrive with something extra, unless it’s a free sachet of ketchup. So what happened to Josiah Vargas, from Indiana, USA, was unusual. He went to McDonald’s to place an order at McAuto. He ordered his usual Sausage McMuffin and in the bag he found a surprising haul: almost 5,000 euros in banknotes.
The young man recorded this unusual situation because he was more than surprised and it went viral. In the video he was faced with the dilemma of whether to keep the money or go in and return it. “And, now, I have to give this back because I’m a good person, I guess”, he finally said with some irony.

In the TikTok video, which has almost 2.5 million views, Josiah shows the whole sequence of returning this “loot” to the staff, who thank him effusively. As a reward for such a good deed, the establishment gave him almost €200 and rewarded him with free food for a month. The owner of the shop, Estephan Awad, thanked the young American for his action: “Josiah’s actions are an inspiration to us all, and we are eternally grateful that he returned our bank deposit,” he said.
Of course, Vargas went to redeem his prize several times at that McDonald’s. And he is still getting used to the sudden fame that viral video gave him. And you, would you have done the same in his place? Or would you have kept the money?
