If after Ashton Kutcher’s orange juice coffee, you thought you’d seen it all, Starbucks has just launched Oleato, a new line of coffees that combines the brand’s typical arabica with a spoonful of cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. The result is a velvety, delicately sweet brew with a new taste and texture. The idea came from Howard Schultz, interim CEO and one of the main architects of Starbucks’ success in the 1980s.

Schultz was inspired by his first trip to Milan to come up with this new drink. “In 1983, I made my first trip to Italy. There I discovered the extraordinary relationship that the Italian people have with Italian coffee, and specifically with espresso. I rushed back to the United States with a vision and a passion to bring that to Starbucks,” he said during the presentation. And the addition of oil came about because in Italy there is a family tradition that has existed in various regions: enjoying a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil every day as an uplifting ritual.

For the time being, it will not come to Spain

The Starbucks team decided to look for a brand and set their sights on Partanna, an Italian extra virgin olive oil company with over 100 years of tradition in producing premium extra virgin olive oil. The blend has been meticulously selected to pair perfectly with Starbucks coffee, providing a smooth and delicious experience.

For the time being, this line of drinks (including 5 varieties) is already available in shops in Milan. It will arrive in the United States in spring and in Japan, the Middle East and the United Kingdom at a later date. For the moment, it seems that Spain is not planning to come. If it were to come to Spain, which Spanish oil do you think would pair best with Starbucks coffees?
