During the podcast ‘Your Mama’s Kitchen‘, hosted by Michele Norris, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves McConaughey talked about their morning rituals in particular and their relationship with food in general.
In the interview, Norris asks the McConaugheys what they’ve learned in their kitchen about ‘how to argue productively’, to which the couple responds with a sweet routine they stick to even if they’re arguing, and it involves tea.
‘I don’t make my tea as well as you do,’ Matthew told his wife in the exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE. ‘But the fact that you make my tea and serve me my tea in the morning makes me say, ‘It just tastes better’.’ He added: ‘Even if you and I disagree, the fact that you’re still making my tea in the morning, serving me my tea… it’s the difference between being married and dating.’
On the podcast, Camila joked about it, saying: ‘Believe me, ladies, some mornings I don’t want to serve that tea’. To which Matthew replied: ‘But she’ll make it for me anyway!’
On the subject of ‘that conflict’ as a couple, Matthew pointed out another example, saying that if he was preparing a steak and sushi dinner he would not stop serving Camila even though he disagreed at the time.
Another of his ways of alleviating that hostility is to find some sweet treat as an effective remedy. Matthew then explained to Norris that ‘a sweet food can de-escalate some things, even if it’s just a nice piece of chocolate or some ice cream.’
