Since opening in May 2024, restaurant owner Marvin Pate aims to fill the tables at Bliss with ‘a grown-up, sexy vibe’.

According to critics, Bliss prepares superb dishes inspired by upscale Caribbean cuisine, such as lamb chop a la cecina in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The problem? Pate is very strict with his clientele, limiting them to no men under 35 and no women under 30. If the diner does not meet the age limit, he or she will be asked to leave the restaurant.

In this respect, it has attracted media attention since its inception for its unusual door policy, which even received the attention of a TV channel such as the Better-Business-Bureau.

As early as 26 May, Bliss wanted to make the restaurant’s philosophy clear on its Facebook account: ‘To ensure an adult and sexy atmosphere, we require all customers to be 30 years or older for women and 35 years or older for men. This policy helps us maintain a sophisticated atmosphere, uphold our standards and support the sustainability of our unique environment.’ Unsurprisingly, that message would spark instant controversy on the internet; leading countless users to criticise it for issues such as its ‘adult and sexy’ wording and its limitation to the public.
