Demna Gvasalia, in the role of creative director of Balenciaga, once again ironises fashion to subvert the codes of the system by transforming everyday objects into controversial luxury accessories. A design process based on decontextualisation that he has followed on countless occasions, as seen in his range of ‘edible it bags’ inspired by crisp bags for the spring-summer 2024 season.
The new collection entitled ‘Antwerp Tote Bag‘ includes four iterations of the bag that evokes the iconic isothermal freezer bag, but now for a whopping €2,700. Balenciaga’s leather bag features a berry and blueberry print, a supermarket-style logo and a barcode on the front, with the handles dyed red.
Within the same culinary range, another version in white mesh calfskin nappa leather is showcased with a vegetable print, a strawberry print and a bread print, including antiqued silver hardware and nylon lining.
The Antwerp bag collection for the SS24 season is now available in selected shops and on the brand’s website for a (not so) modest price of 2,700 euros.
