The Spanish management company Sherpa Capital has entrusted BBVA as financial advisor to coordinate the sale of 100% of Crego e Monaguillo, a leading Galician winery in the Monterrei appellation. According to industry sources consulted by Expansión, the process is still at an early stage, but Sherpa has already decided to launch a competitive auction after receiving an unsolicited offer last summer.

Crego e Monaguillo specializes in the production of high quality wines, mainly for the Horeca channel. Its portfolio includes both white wines, made with the Godello variety, and red wines, produced with Mencia grapes, achieving a balance between both lines.

Growth and professionalization

Since Sherpa took control almost two years ago, the winery has experienced remarkable growth. Turnover has increased by 27% to around 7 million euros, while ebitda has reached 3 million euros, 67% more than at the time of the acquisition. This growth is attributed to the professionalization driven by Sherpa and the increase in production capacity, favored by the entry into production of new vines planted in recent years.

Prior to the acquisition, Crego e Monaguillo depended in part on the purchase of grapes from local growers due to the limited capacity of its own vineyards. This challenge has been addressed with a long-term strategy that has enhanced its productive autonomy.

BBVA, a strategic partner in the wine industry

The choice of BBVA as advisor is no accident. The bank has extensive experience in the wine sector, as it demonstrated earlier this year when it advised Sograpé on the purchase of Viña Mayor, previously owned by Entrecanales Domecq e Hijos.

Sherpa acquired Crego e Monaguillo for around €10 million, but, following the growth of recent years and a favorable context for investment, the winery could have been revalued to reach €25-30 million.

In addition to Crego e Monaguillo, Sherpa controls Terra Cellers (Reserva de la Tierra), acquired in 2022. Although it was initially planned to integrate both wineries into a single platform, differences in their business models and markets led to keep them as independent companies.

The transaction reflects the continued interest in the wine sector, with a focus on value creation through professionalization and resource optimization. In the coming weeks, Sherpa is expected to formally initiate the competitive process, attracting potential investors interested in this promising Galician asset.
