Maurizio Cattelan‘s iconoclastic work would begin to have a prominent and/or irreverent presence in the art world when he first presented at Art Basel Miami his piece titled ‘Comedian‘ (2019). From then on, and from the stir he caused by his installation based on a banana with a sticky tape attached to the wall, he has been acquiring an exorbitant value with the passage of time.
His allegory or critique of global commerce was based on the following manifesto: ‘In art fairs, speed and business reign, so I saw it this way: if I had to be in a fair, I could sell a banana like others sell their paintings. I could play within the system, but with my rules’.
As an artistic saga of three, the first two bananas sold rather quickly for a staggering $120,000 USD through Perrotin, followed by a slight price increase of $150,000 USD to an anonymous buyer linked to the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Now, it is the turn of the third work, which will be auctioned at luxury house Sotheby’s.
It is estimated that the third banana from the ‘Comedian‘ collection could fetch between 1 and 1.5 million dollars. The most sarcastic or ambitious collectors will bid there to get their hands on this work, which will tour 10 cities around the world and will be auctioned at The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction, from November 8 to 20.
