Joey Chestnut just became the world champion of the hot dog eating competition after taking on Takeru Kobayashi in Netflix‘s ‘Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef‘ event, which aired live on September 2.
Both rivals share a long history of internet memes and insults, as well as having consumed hundreds of hot dogs throughout their lives. Now, after 14 years without competing against each other, Chestnut and Kobayashi met again in a new ring: the stage of the HyperX Arena in Las Vegas.
The competition was governed by several rules that differed from Nathan’s famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, such as not being able to separate the bun from the hot dog or dip it in water.
The culinary foes gave it their all during a very close competition in which, with only two minutes left, Chestnut had already devoured 72 hot dogs, while Kobayashi had ‘only’ reached 60. A few seconds later, Chestnut broke his personal and world record and had eaten 76 hot dogs in eight minutes and 45 seconds.
The records continued as the challenge progressed. Chestnut was crowned champion of the Netflix special with 83 hot dogs, a score that also beat his personal and world record. Meanwhile, Kobayashi, who said this food competition would be his last before the live show, finished with a final score of 66 hot dogs.
