Salt Bae‘s culinary empire seems to be in a period of steady decline, which has led him to close most of his restaurants in NYC. Now, it’s the turn of his Nusr-Et Steakhouse in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, which is set to open in 2022 as a follow-up to the Nusr-Et location in Midtown.
The closure is part of a ‘strategic shift of the company to international markets’, leaving Gökçe with only one restaurant in New York: a Midtown branch of Nusr-Et Steakhouse at 60 W. 53rd Street, near Sixth Avenue.
Last year, the Turkish butcher would also close his Salt Bae Burger, which was even slammed by critics as one of the worst restaurants in New York, and for its controversial prices of $99 milkshakes and free veggie burgers for women only.
Beyond that, Salt Bae has also faced other legal challenges with his restaurants in recent years, such as when in 2019 a former waiter filed a lawsuit against him for stealing tips from workers. In the end, it seems that New Yorkers have stopped praising Salt Bae’s culinary persona and have relegated him to an internet meme.
