Drinking a Coca-Cola is as simple and common as opening a can or bottle and serving the soft drink in a glass with ice and lemon. But did you know that almost 100 years ago the ritual for preparing it was quite different? In a coffee shop called Lexington Candy Shop, located on New York’s Upper East Side, they still prepare Coca-Cola as they used to.

This almost centenary establishment, currently run by the founder’s grandson, is still committed to the tradition of the past, carrying out the process of preparing the soft drink as it was done back then: “Coca-Cola, any of the soft drinks… We pump the syrup by hand and then mix it with carbonated water with a spoon and create Coca-Cola for you… just as it would have been done in 1925 or 1940”, the current owner commented to Tasting Table. They also top the glass with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if the customer wishes.
Lexington Candy Shop has maintained the soda dispenser since it opened its doors, and it is common that every now and then it goes viral on social networks because it is like traveling to the last century through a drink. In addition, they also serve other peculiar elaborations such as the soft drink that mixes milk, soda and chocolate syrup, also very popular in the early twentieth century.
