The European Commission has recognized Garrotxa goat cheese as a new geographical indication (PGI) within the EU register of designations of origin, which guarantees consumer quality and collective rights over the product to all producers in the geographical area throughout the EU market.
Thus, this artisan Catalan cheese is registered as ‘Formatge Garrotxa / Garrotxa Cheese’ as a designation that recognizes the peculiarities of its production process, including the refining and development of fungi in its rind that, in any case, can be inoculated artificially. According to the Community Executive explains in a statement, this cheese is an inseparable element of the culture and symbol of the Catalan cultural heritage.
With the registration of this new designation, there are now 1,681 agricultural products on the list of designations of origin protected by the European Union.
