If you are one of those who usually go to the supermarket without prior planning to make more conscious purchases, this practical guide on seasonal fruits and vegetables prepared by Greenpeace, will be very helpful. In addition to benefiting your pocket and your health, you will also be supporting the sustainability of the planet. Learn how to consume seasonal products and make the most of all your purchases. Take note!
Reasons to eat in season
To help the local product and ensure the highest possible quality, it is always advisable to consume local products, because you help local production and, consequently, also reduce the impact on the environment. Greenpeace suggests paying close attention to labeling and provenance, as well as seasonality. Of course, also support farmers’ markets and organic stores, whose products are fresh and local.
Another aspect to keep in mind is that by eating seasonal products you take better advantage of all the nutritional benefits. Fruits and vegetables of each season respond to specific needs of our body, as in winter citrus fruits full of vitamin C, for example.
In terms of sustainability, the consumption of this type of food is undoubtedly very important. When it comes to fruits out of season, it means that they are imported and travel by ship or plane, with the polluting contribution that this implies, to which must be added the use of pesticides and heating to ensure the productions, when it is done in our country. Finally, seasonal products help to reduce food waste, because being in season, more immediate consumption is guaranteed.
