Bodega Macán is a project that was born almost 20 years ago, being founded jointly by the Álvarez Mezquiriz family, owners of Vega Sicilia -one of the most prestigious wineries in our country- and the Rothschilds. Also called Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, it was born with the idea of producing great wines in Rioja, a unique, singular and inimitable wine region.
During the first five years, they studied the terroirs and carried out the acquisition of vineyards. It was in 2009 when the project was properly launched with the first vintage of their two wines: Macán and Macán Clásico. The definitive launch of the brand took place in 2013, with the release of the first bottles. But, as Cinco Días reveals, it seems that the project has not been profitable.
A year ago, the company registered more than 600,000 € of losses, as can be seen in the accounts deposited at the Mercantile Registry, a figure that was 22% more than in 2023; although it had achieved a turnover of 15% more, with a total of 4.5 million, although the overall figure was still negative. The accumulated losses amounted to 5.4 million.
As a measure to try to continue guaranteeing the viability of the project, now the two companies that own Bodegas Macán have decided to inject 1.25 million euros, according to Cinco Días “in proportion to their participation”. In addition, the representatives of the winery have informed the aforementioned media that, with this injection, they intend to reach “normalized figures as from 2024”.
