The fast food chain is ditching one of its most iconic elements: the thick, clear plastic spoons for more sustainable alternatives.
McFlurry‘s new design will include a ‘smaller black spoon that uses less plastic’, according to a statement obtained by CNN. It is the same spoon currently served with ice cream. This ‘small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste’, McDonald’s adds in the statement.
The spoon change will not only implement a positive change for the public, but also for the employees. The square, hollow handle of the old McFlurry spoon had a function- and it wasn’t a straw, as some fans theorised- it was attached to an arm of the McFlurry machine and served as a spindle to mix all those M&Ms and other candies into the ice cream.
This innovative act within the McDonald’s universe will thus consist of making McFlurries with reusable spindles that can be removed for cleaning and replaced with new ones, as a new action to embrace eco-futurism.
