Melo’s Bar is the history of Madrid. The location they have in Lavapiés, at 44 Ave María Street, has remained open for more than forty years. It only remained closed for a few months when the longtime owners, José Ramón and Encarni, decided so in 2020 when he was already 65 years old.
The new owners, Rafael Riqueni and Ignacio Revuelta, have maintained the same spirit at the bar and their success has now led them to expand the presence of Melo’s throughout Madrid. And in fact, they have already announced that they will open a new location in the Moncloa-Argüelles area, specifically on Andrés Mellado Street, 16.
The new Moncloa location maintains the same menu as the original but brings some new features. Among other things, there will be seating for customers and a store area to purchase their merchandise.
And in this new place, you can eat what has always been at Melo’s: empanadillas, blood sausage, and padrón peppers. And of course, the star dish, as in the original place, the ‘zapatillas‘, which consists of two slices of bread between which bacon and cheese are placed. That simple and that tasty.
What the former owners took with them forever was the secret of their croquettes. Today they are also offered on the menu, but different from the originals, and those who have already been lucky enough to try them say that they have nothing to envy of the previous ones.
And if you’re already thinking about going to Melo’s for your ‘zapatillas’, the last thing you should know is that they don’t take reservations, so you’ll be served on a first-come, first-served basis. As it always was at the original Melo’s.
