Iberostar Hotels & Resorts has reduced food waste by 28% during the first half of 2023, revealing significant progress on its path towards a future without waste sent to landfill. Thanks to the Winnow system’s artificial intelligence technology, installed in 48 of its more than 100 hotels worldwide, Iberostar has managed to save 1.5 million meals per year in hotels that have this innovative device. This figure shows Iberostar’s progress towards its goal of being waste-free by 2025 and carbon neutral by 2030.

The progress achieved by the company between January and June 2023 is summarized as 735,000 meals saved in total; 11% reduction in waste weight; and 1,264 tons of CO2 saved. From a climate perspective, this means that Iberostar has stopped emitting 2,500 tons of CO2 per year. The equivalent of 6.4 million kilometers traveled by a vehicle (source: EPA calculator).

As part of its ambitious and pioneering Wave of Change sustainability movement, Iberostar Hotels & Resorts began implementing Winnow’s technology in September 2022, with the goal of saving 1,600 tons of food waste per year, equivalent to 5.3 million meals.

‘Our partnership with Winnow is a testament to our commitment towards a waste-free future. It is truly inspiring to see our chefs embrace the program and create tangible change. This achievement reinforces Iberostar’s position as a leader in responsible tourism,’ states Megan Morikawa, Iberostar’s Global Director of Sustainability.

These milestones demonstrate the vital role the hospitality industry can play in combating climate change and creating a sustainable and positive future.
