That Spanish gastronomy has been in the top positions in the world for decades is something we all know for sure. More and more Spanish restaurants and chefs are being recognized worldwide, and the traditional Spanish recipes have become a true emblem. In fact, in the latest World’s 50 Best list, Spain was the country with the most restaurants included, with six in total: Disfrutar (2nd), DiverXO (3rd), Asador Etxebarri (4th), Quique Dacosta (20th), Elkano (22nd) and Mugaritz (31st). Ahead of other very popular gastronomies such as Italian or French. In this context, CNN has decided to compile the 14 essential Spanish dishes that you must try when you visit Spain: from paella to Padrón peppers.
Among the essential recipes, of course, can not miss the well-known Valencian paella. The media itself highlights it as one of the most famous Spanish dishes, but also one of the most mistreated.
Tapas and regional recipes
They also recommend trying typical tapas such as patatas bravas, croquettes -especially ham croquettes-, Padrón peppers, and two other icons of Spanish gastronomy: ham and potato omelet. A plate of meatballs is another of the recipes in tapa format that CNN considers essential to try in Spain.
Other traditional dishes from different Spanish regions are also included in the CNN list, including Andalusian gazpacho, Asturian fabada, fideuà, migas and cod -especially in pil pil style, typical of the Basque Country-.
In the breakfast or snacks section, of course, churros with chocolate are included. Regarding the dessert recipes, it is striking that they have chosen to highlight only the leche frita, which is defined as a popular dessert that is prepared by beating milk, egg yolks and flour. After cooling and solidifying, it is coated in breadcrumbs and fried.
