The Andalusian Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds has applauded the completion this Saturday of the exception to the size of 22 millimeters of the Italian cuttlefish, something that, according to its president, Manuel Fernandez, «will end the discrimination» of Spanish fishermen, since in the domestic market the minimum size is 25 millimeters.
As indicated by the entity in a press release, it puts an end to this exceptionality, «despite the efforts made by the Italian government to maintain it», but «the truth is that the regulation that provides for such an exception has not been modified or extended in time in this regard.
Thus, Fernandez has appreciated that this «will end the discrimination suffered by fishermen in this time in the Spanish market, for which the size of the mollusk is 25 millimeters».
«The fishing fleet of the clam, after these six years suffering absolute unfair competition, has been put on the ropes on many occasions, being very much on the edge, seeing how Europe with this exception has hit it again and again. I hope and trust that this discrimination of two European countries is over and we can begin to see some light,» said Manuel Fernandez.
The also major pattern of the Fishermen’s Guild of Punta Umbria has stressed that the Fisheries Inspectorate «should not allow from January 1 the marketing of seafood from Italy with size of 22 millimeters».
That is why he has asked that «as always» the Fisheries Inspectorate, in the exercise of its functions, «strictly monitor this compliance from the new year and, if not, appropriate measures are taken.»
«Let’s hope that the market circumstances, once and for all, are equal for everyone and that 2023 comes loaded with good prices for the fluke sector,» he concluded.
