Buttermilk is always a good addition to your baking, especially when making pancakes, cakes or other baked goods. It’s buttery and slightly acid taste makes those chocolate chip cookies extra yummy.
Making buttermilk is pretty simple but this even simpler recipe will also help you avoid the extra fat and an extra trip to the supermarket.
If you have a glass measuring cup, milk and vinegar or lemon juice you should have all you need.
First, place one tablespoon of vinegar (or lemon juice) in the cup and then pour one cup of milk and let it stand for 5 minutes. Once you have completed the process you will be able to enjoy this substitute buttermilk in your baking.
If you are looking for a traditional way of making buttermilk this is also quite simple and will only take you 10 minutes. You’ll need heavy cream and a jar with a lid on it. Fill the jar halfway with cream and shake it for several minutes until you can see that the cream is gaining consistency and finally becomes yellowish. That will be the butter and a separate liquid will also be present. That’s your buttermilk. Pour it out and use as needed. Make sure you also use that butter you just made!
